Rockaway Beach Pavilion

SKIN TO STRUCTURE

Invigorating addition to boardwalk to promote community gathering.

This project is a response to the recent superstorm Sandy that devastated the New York coastline in the fall of 2012. After extensive research, it was discovered that the people wanted to rejuvinate the boardwalk that previously been a main source of income and tourist attraction for the region.

I started off this project by creating  physical models using mylar and foam to form a tile progression. The models were digitized and arrayed to form a unit. I formed a surface from line work derived from the conversion and diversion of human traffic patterns on the beach of Rockaway, NY. The surface served as a guide for the placement of the arrayed tiles. The entire mass was an investigation into the ripping, tearing, and peeling of the tiles; blurring the line between unit and massing.
